Overview

The University of Freiburg has received multiple State Teaching Awards, an honor given by the Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg to promote instruction at the states higher education institutions. The award was conferred for the first time in 1993. Since this initial success, the University of Freiburg has won the award again and again.In order to strengthen instruction even more, the University of Freiburg introduced its ownUniversity Teaching Awardin 2007.

Numerous former students as well as benefactors and sponsors intensify a culture of dynamic exchange with the city, the region, and the international scientific community.All of these groups work to give the University of Freiburg the vitality that will continue to provide fertile ground for outstanding achievements in the future.

University buildings are integrated within the city of Freiburg, on three large campuses next to the historical city centre. Some university buildings display historic architecture, like the old university library.

Many famous intellectuals, scientists and cultural figures attended or taught at the university, including physicist Martin Heidegger, philosophers Hannah Arendt and Rudolf Carnap and biologist Paul Uhlenhurth. Nineteen Nobel Prize winners are associated with the university, and many of the university’s academics have been awarded with highest German research prize for work done while at the university.
