The Oslo National Academy of the Arts consists of six departments: Design, Art and Craft, The Academy of Fine Art, The Academy of Dance, The Academy of Opera, and The Academy of Theatre.
The Oslo National Academy of the Arts is a cultural institution of significance – not least for its surroundings; one of our objectives is to develop KHiO as a cultural venue and the academy offers a wide-ranging and varied programme of cultural activities that are open to the general public.
Our aim is to educate artists and designers with the ability to both reflect on, and experiment in, their chosen field and make lasting contributions to the diversity of our society.
The department of Art and Craft seeks to elaborate on the relationship between art and life, on matters of materiality (production, sustainability, the global), on design and architecture, and on artistic practice in social and political contexts in a contemporary perspective. The department’s ideology derives from the early British Arts and Crafts movement and the German Bauhaus workshop traditions with the ambition of integrating art into the social, public, and private spheres.
Emphasis is placed on research of craft as an expanded field, on the application and integration of art in private and public spheres, on interdisciplinary practices, and the workshop as a site for artistic activity.
