Overview

The university's origins can be traced to 1896 with the opening of the Royal Technical Institute, Salford, a merger of Salford Working Men's College founded in 1858 and Pendleton Mechanics' Institute founded in 1850.

There are countless reasons why the University of Salford could be the place for you: our unbeatable links to industry that will get you work-ready; our location in the heart of Greater Manchester; our state-of-the-art facilities and award-winning academics.

We form strong partnerships with businesses and organisations from all sectors, working hand-in-hand with them to develop courses that are up-to-date and relevant to the challenges of modern industry. Our academic staff are professionals in their fields, with many still actively engaging with industry to continuously update their knowledge and inform their teaching.

We use our partnerships and staff networks to create opportunities for you to gain real, hands-on experience that will help you to develop the professional and personal skills that employers value. The majority of our courses offer work placements, as well as opportunities to take part in live briefs, where you’ll work in teams to deliver solutions for real clients.

The Patient Simulation Suites in Mary Seacole building replicate a real hospital, allowing students on Nursing and Midwifery courses to learn vital skills in an environment that's as close to the real thing as possible.

Once you register at the University of Salford, you’ll automatically become a member of Salford Student Union. The SU is run by and for students, independently of the University, to help you love your life at Salford. There are over 50 student-led societies covering all kinds of activities and causes – and if you can’t find one for your particular interest, the SU can support you to start your own! The SU also runs Atmosphere bar and café, offering a place to relax with your friends after lectures with a great range of food and drink at affordable prices. The bar also hosts DJs, pub quiz and karaoke nights, sports screenings and other events.

Our main campus sits right next to Peel Park, one of the oldest public parks in the country. One of the most unique spaces within the University, the anechoic chamber has been built to minimise noise as much as possible – meaning it’s probably the quietest place you’ll ever experience!

Salford’s Energy House is the only full-scale, climate controlled building in Europe, designed to allow researchers to find ways of improving energy efficiencies in British homes.

The library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering group study spaces, PCs, Macs and laptop loans. Our dedicated library support staff also offer a range study skills sessions.

The Maker movement has found its home at the University of Salford, with our new Maker Space open to staff and students.

'Megalab' - named after Sir Walter Bodmer, one of the proposers of the Human Genome Project which mapped three billion pairs of human DNA - is our world-class facility for the School of Environment and Life Sciences.

New Adelphi is the new home for culture and creativity on campus, and houses our School of Arts and Media and Architecture facilities.
