The university's origins can be traced to 1896 with the opening of the Royal Technical Institute, Salford, a merger of Salford Working Men's College founded in 1858 and Pendleton Mechanics' Institute founded in 1850.

Once you register at the University of Salford, you’ll automatically become a member of Salford Student Union. The SU is run by and for students, independently of the University, to help you love your life at Salford. There are over 50 student-led societies covering all kinds of activities and causes – and if you can’t find one for your particular interest, the SU can support you to start your own! The SU also runs Atmosphere bar and café, offering a place to relax with your friends after lectures with a great range of food and drink at affordable prices. The bar also hosts DJs, pub quiz and karaoke nights, sports screenings and other events.
