Overview

With its main campus located on the shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, 300 km northeast of Quebec City, the Université du Québec à Rimouski is the northernmost university in Quebec.

Choosing UQAR is a choice for a university where student success is a priority. Recognized for the outstanding academic mentorship offered by professors and lecturers, UQAR provides a learning environment that fosters community, social, and sporting initiatives and learning, and supports student development.

Owing to its privileged geographic location, UQAR enables students to explore and study exceptional natural environments that are a stone’s throw away from the campuses. While maintaining a primary focus on academic achievement, the training programs offered by UQAR stand out for their excellence and distinctive nature.

The geology of eastern Quebec heavily influences its research areas, including its distinct focus on marine sciences.

UQAR’s internationally renowned oceanography program boasts a $10-million research ship, the Coriolis II.

Students come from around the globe to study with noted scientists whose expertise covers a broad spectrum of ocean-related issues. Also noteworthy is the environmental chemistry and bioresources program that brings students into the lab and out into the field for 70 per cent of their courses, and a research area known as “nordicity,” which explores the changing landscape of the far North.

A unique biology program provides broad theoretical and practical training. On the Lévis campus, across the St. Lawrence River from Quebec City, the most popular programs include education, nursing, administration, computer science and accounting.

UQAR has a wealth of diverse world-class expertise and it is rated among the most dynamic Canadian universities. It stands out among universities for its research and development policy aligned with the characteristics of its territory.
